Psalms 128:2Sefaria

Finding true peace and blessing often comes not from endless ambition, but from the quiet satisfaction of honest, self-sustaining work. The primary approach among commentators is that the ideal presented here does not encourage the pursuit of wealth. Instead, it celebrates a state where a person enjoys the fruits of simple, direct labor without anxiously chasing after capital or becoming consumed by large business ventures Physical exertion should be limited to what is strictly necessary to maintain a basic livelihood rather than being used as a tool to hoard assets. This approach serves as the practical application of the classic ideal of being truly rich by rejoicing in whatever portion one already has

Beyond the practical benefits of a simple life, financial independence carries a distinct spiritual advantage. A question naturally arises as to why it is so important for a person to rely specifically on their own labor. One might assume it would be better to dedicate all their time to serving God and allow others to provide financial support, similar to traditional partnerships between those who study and those who fund them. However, when a person is sustained by their own hands and does not rely on the financial backing of others, they are not required to share the spiritual reward of their good deeds. In this state of independence, all the spiritual merit remains entirely their own, complete and undivided by any partnership

As a result of this honest and self-sufficient lifestyle, a person receives a double promise of happiness and goodness. Most commentators agree that this dual blessing indicates that the individual inherits both worlds. They will experience happiness, success, and praise from people in this current world, while also being assured a complete and perfect reward from God in the World to Come This extensive guarantee leads to the understanding that a person who benefits from their own hard work achieves a level even greater than someone who simply fears God. While a God-fearing person is promised happiness, the honest worker is assured a double measure of good [תורה תמימה]. Ultimately, the blend of diligent work, integrity, and the ability to be satisfied with little grants a person profound peace of mind and genuine happiness
