Psalms 63:4Sefaria

כִּי־ט֣וֹב חַ֭סְדְּךָ מֵחַיִּ֗ים שְׂפָתַ֥י יְשַׁבְּחֽוּנְךָ׃

A profound connection to God and the privilege of offering Him praise hold far more value than mere physical existence. The gift of life is not an end in itself, but rather a pathway to spiritual meaning and a deeper bond with the Creator. Commentators offer various perspectives on the nature of the divine kindness that surpasses physical survival. Some explain that it refers to the gift of the intellect and the soul, which lifts humanity above the basic physical existence shared with all animals [רד״ק]. Others suggest it is the resting of the Divine Presence among the people of Israel [אבן עזרא]. Alternatively, simply having the awareness and memory of God's kindness is enough to inspire a person to give thanks [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On the other hand, this kindness can be seen as the eternal reward kept for the righteous in the future. Because this future good is far better than any worldly pleasure, it is fitting to praise God even when facing troubles and suffering [מאירי].

A major approach connects these concepts by explaining that physical life is merely a tool. Its entire purpose is to enable a person to praise God [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם]. A soul without a physical body cannot speak words of praise. Therefore, the gift of life finds its true purpose only when a person uses it to express gratitude [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, the simple fact that God allows a material human being to praise the Master of everything is an extraordinary privilege. The right for physical lips to praise the Creator is actually greater and more important than a person's natural life [אלשיך, חומת אנך]. Through this deep realization, the physical body rises above its natural needs and fears, such as thirsting in a desert or facing mortal danger. Instead, it discovers its ultimate happiness simply by praising and clinging to God [אלשיך].
