איוב, פרק ד׳, פסוק י״ד

Job 4:14Sefaria

פַּ֣חַד קְ֭רָאַנִי וּרְעָדָ֑ה וְרֹ֖ב עַצְמוֹתַ֣י הִפְחִֽיד׃

Prophetic revelation is rarely a peaceful experience; it is a powerful spiritual event that shakes a person to their physical core. Eliphaz describes the sheer terror of encountering a rush of spiritual energy, an overwhelming force that strikes and subdues human matter. This encounter is understood as an event that happened upon him by chance [מצודת ציון], yet it also carried the weight of a sudden call, waking him to listen to the revelation [אלשיך]. The suddenness of the vision felt almost like a physical attack [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The fear that gripped him was not a natural anxiety or the result of a normal dream. Rather, it was a direct reaction to an angel or a spirit of prophecy appearing before him [רש״י, תקות אנוש, אלשיך].

The experience unfolds as a gradual, step-by-step physical collapse. It began with an initial wave of fear, which immediately caused his entire body to tremble from terror [מלבי״ם]. From there, the deep anxiety continued to spread through all his senses, penetrating deep inside his limbs [רלב״ג] and reaching the very bones that make up his body [תקות אנוש, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

This severe physical reaction illustrates the inherent nature of prophecy. Coming face to face with supreme holiness places a heavy dread on the material body. As the soul absorbs more of the spiritual energy and begins to detach from physical matter, the body itself begins to break down [אלשיך]. This intense reaction highlights that prophecy is a supernatural state, one that is incredibly difficult for a person to contain as it takes over by force. This stands in sharp contrast to prophets of the highest level, such as Moses and Elijah, who were capable of receiving prophetic visions without suffering such physical shattering [תקות אנוש].
