Psalms 29:7Sefaria

God's voice echoes through the world with an overwhelming power, leaving a trail of fire in its wake. This divine force operates across nature, human history, and the hidden spiritual realms, constantly shaping and cutting into reality. The core action of this voice is one of carving or hewing [מצודת ציון], a concept that unfolds in multiple layers of meaning.

The primary approach among commentators is that this depicts a fierce storm. God's voice is heard as booming thunder, which strikes the earth and carves out bright, powerful flashes of lightning Some take this physical display even further, describing violent geological events. In this view, the sheer force of the divine voice shatters mountains, sparking fire from the breaking rocks [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, it shakes the earth so violently that it crumbles, causing terrible flames to erupt from the deep underground onto the desert floor [מלבי״ם]. Another perspective suggests that the voice carves out burning, iron-like stones directly from solid flint

Beyond the raw forces of nature, this carving action takes on a vivid historical reality during the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. When God spoke the Ten Commandments, His words emerged as actual flames. These fiery words acted as physical tools, carving and engraving the exact shapes of the letters directly into the stone Tablets of the Covenant [רש״י].

Looking toward the future, this imagery serves as a prophecy for the Messianic era and the ultimate wars of Gog and Magog. The lightning and flames represent God's justice and His burning anger against evil. His voice alone strikes down wicked nations and idolaters, completely destroying them without the need for physical weapons This battle extends beyond the physical earth and reaches into the heavens. The carving flames symbolize God cutting down the spiritual guardian angels of those wicked nations, bringing about their spiritual defeat at the exact same time as their physical downfall below [אלשיך].
