תהלים, פרק כ״ט, פסוק י״א

Psalms 29:11Sefaria

יְֽהֹוָ֗ה עֹ֭ז לְעַמּ֣וֹ יִתֵּ֑ן יְהֹוָ֓ה ׀ יְבָרֵ֖ךְ אֶת־עַמּ֣וֹ בַשָּׁלֽוֹם׃ {פ}

The peak of divine revelation does not end in massive storms, but rather in a precise balance between inner strength and absolute tranquility. Even during times of thunder and turbulence, there is a prophetic vision ensuring that God will grant His people resilience and security [אבן עזרא].

Commentators explore the nature of this promised strength through two main lenses. On a national level, it represents the physical power, governance, and authority that God will give the Israelites to overcome surrounding nations [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, מאירי]. Alternatively, this strength is understood on a purely spiritual level. It represents the Torah itself, or the spiritual intensity gained through practices like wearing tefillin [תורה תמימה, אלשיך]. This spiritual vitality is given to the people so they can praise and honor God properly [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

Alongside this immense power comes the blessing of peace. Outwardly, this points to a permanent end to warfare, ushering in an era where the world is filled with knowledge and global leadership functions without weapons [רד״ק, מאירי, אלשיך]. However, peace also serves a crucial internal purpose. Human nature dictates that an abundance of power often leads to pride, internal struggles, and eventual ruin. To prevent this, God pairs the blessing of peace directly with strength, ensuring that newfound power is channeled into social brotherhood rather than conflict [אלשיך]. This ultimate peace serves as the final seal of all divine blessings, mirroring the conclusion of the Priestly Blessing [תורה תמימה].

The combination of these two gifts creates a complete picture of historical and spiritual healing. The destruction of the First Temple was caused by the abandonment of the Torah, representing a loss of spiritual strength. The Second Temple was destroyed due to baseless hatred, the exact opposite of peace. The promise of both strength and peace guarantees the repair of these two historical flaws [אלשיך]. Furthermore, these concepts are deeply dependent on one another. The divine blessing of peace is so overwhelmingly vast that the people actually require immense spiritual and mental fortitude just to absorb it without collapsing under its weight [אלשיך]. Ultimately, a perfect harmony is formed, blending power and authority with the profound gift of quiet and calm [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
