תהלים, פרק צ״ג, פסוק ד׳

Psalms 93:4Sefaria

The deafening roar of raging waters and the violent crash of ocean waves naturally represent massive, threatening forces. Yet, set against this earthly chaos is the absolute, quiet, and supreme control of the Creator. The stark contrast between the turbulent noise below and the serene authority above highlights God's complete mastery over both the wild forces of nature and the unfolding events of human history.

The primary approach among commentators views this dynamic as a direct comparison. No matter how powerful the crashing waters may seem, God dwelling on high is infinitely stronger and firmly positioned above them, ensuring they can never overcome Him [רש״י, רד״ק, מצודת דוד]. On an allegorical level, these turbulent waters symbolize the various nations and empires that raise their voices and rage against the Israelites. Just as God stands above the physical oceans, His mighty hand remains poised on high to humble and topple these hostile kingdoms [רש״י, רד״ק].

However, another perspective suggests that the oceans are not opposing forces at all, but rather instruments that express God's greatness. In this view, the thunderous sounds of the crashing waves are actually a chorus of praise, declaring to the world that God is mighty on high [ביאור שטיינזלץ, מלבי״ם]. The natural world submits to God as He dictates its very nature, controls the heavenly systems, and sets an impassable boundary of sand that the sea can never cross [מלבי״ם, מאירי].

Beyond the earthly oceans, a cosmological dimension exists where the heavenly spheres themselves produce mighty sounds similar to rushing waters. However, those who are spiritually deaf remain unable to hear this celestial music, just as the spiritually blind fail to see God's awesome deeds [אבן עזרא]. Historically, this display of supreme power echoes the splitting of the Red Sea. The physical breaking of the waters proved that God's absolute rule extends far beyond earthly elements, as at that exact moment, He also shattered the spiritual guardian of Egypt in the upper heavens [אלשיך].

Finally, the sages draw a practical lesson from the concept of God's enduring might. They advise that a person who wishes for their earthly assets to last for generations should plant a specific, deeply rooted tree known as the eder. The lasting strength of this tree serves as a physical reflection of God's own enduring and mighty presence [תורה תמימה].
