פרשת חיי שרה

Genesis 23:12Sefaria

וַיִּשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִפְנֵ֖י עַ֥ם הָאָֽרֶץ׃

In a public and impressive gathering, Abraham responds to the local leadership's offer with a ceremonial gesture of gratitude and humility. This entire narrative highlights the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham. He has become a respected prince of God in the eyes of the local inhabitants, who address him as a lord. At the same time, the events serve to teach future generations the profound duty of honoring the burial places of the patriarchs [תולדות יצחק].

When expressing his thanks, a question arises regarding exactly who was the recipient of Abraham's bow. The primary approach among commentators is that Abraham directed his bow toward Ephron himself, doing so in full view of the local people. By bowing his head [תולדות יצחק], Abraham intended to praise Ephron and express deep appreciation for his generous offer, acting as though he had already taken possession of the field [אבן עזרא, ביאור יש״ר, ביאור שטיינזלץ, שפתי כהן].

This public display underscores Abraham's immense humility. Ordinarily, individuals might hesitate to bestow such significant honor upon a single person in front of a large crowd, but Abraham showed no such reluctance [חומת אנך]. A subtle physical detail further colors the scene. Unlike an earlier moment in the narrative, there is no mention of Abraham rising after he bowed. Because Ephron was standing directly in front of him, a simple bow of the head was sufficient, rather than a full prostration from which he would need to stand back up [בכור שור].

In contrast, another perspective suggests that the bow was actually directed at the crowd itself. According to this view, Abraham sought to thank the entire public. Through this humble gesture, he was declaring that Ephron's willingness to sell the land stemmed from the honor of the gathered community, rather than from Abraham's own personal merit [ספורנו].
