The tide of the battle shifts dramatically, transforming a simple retreat into a complete, divinely orchestrated defeat. What begins as a standard military maneuver quickly becomes a testament to heavenly intervention.

The conflict actually unfolds in a two-stage process. Initially, the Israelite army breaks rank and begins to flee. However, the clash does not end with their escape. Even after this first wave of retreat, God actively steps in and hands the Israelites over to the army of Judah a second time. Because He delivers them directly into the hands of their enemies, the men of Judah are ultimately able to strike down five hundred thousand soldiers [מלבי״ם].
