The Kingdom of Israel gained control over the Kingdom of Judah without ever launching a military invasion. Instead, their influence took hold through a quiet, practical infiltration of the royal court. Following the death of the king's father, the queen mother, Athaliah, used her powerful position to bring her own loyalists from the House of Ahab into the palace. These advisors quickly surrounded the new king, poisoning his judgment and leading him to do evil in the eyes of God [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The outcome of this guidance was entirely ruinous. The counsel provided by the men of the House of Ahab was never intended for the king's success or benefit. Rather, their advice served a single, dark purpose: to completely corrupt and destroy him [מצודת דוד].
