שמואל ב, פרק כ״א, פסוק י״ז

II Samuel 21:17Sefaria

וַיַּֽעֲזׇר־לוֹ֙ אֲבִישַׁ֣י בֶּן־צְרוּיָ֔ה וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י וַיְמִתֵ֑הוּ אָ֣ז נִשְׁבְּעוּ֩ אַנְשֵֽׁי־דָוִ֨ד ל֜וֹ לֵאמֹ֗ר לֹא־תֵצֵ֨א ע֤וֹד אִתָּ֙נוּ֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְלֹ֥א תְכַבֶּ֖ה אֶת־נֵ֥ר יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {פ}

A sudden moment of immense danger on the battlefield marks a dramatic turning point in King David's role as a warrior. When the king faces a deadly threat, Abishai steps in to save his life. This rescue is understood in two complementary ways. On a physical level, Abishai directly confronts the Philistine attacker, striking and killing him to secure the king's safety [אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. At the same time, this intervention occurs on a spiritual level, as Abishai also supports David through prayer [רש"י].

Following this narrow escape, David's men are forced to confront a harsh reality. Observing that their king has grown old, tired, and physically exhausted, they are terrified at the thought of him facing such a mortal threat again [אברבנאל]. The soldiers realize they can no longer afford the risk of having him on the front lines [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. To guarantee his safety, they take a solemn oath directed at David himself, firmly forbidding him from ever participating in future battles [מצודת דוד].

The men justify this decision by comparing the king to a lamp that must never be put out. Commentators agree that David is seen as God's lamp, radiating light and positive influence over the land and all its people [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל]. Beyond his leadership, the entire nation of Israel enjoys divine protection and care through his merit. If David were to die in combat, it would be as though the lamp of the entire nation had been extinguished, plunging them into sudden darkness as if the sun had set on the people. Recognizing this heavy reality, his loyal servants understand that it is their absolute duty to protect his life at all costs and keep him far from the dangers of war [רלב"ג, אברבנאל].
