David's growing family is documented carefully, concluding the record of his children by noting the birth of nine additional sons. A curious detail emerges from this family registry, as two specific names, Elishama and Eliphelet, appear twice. Giving identical names to living siblings in the same family is highly unusual. The primary approach among commentators is that the first two children given these names passed away at a young age. To honor their memory, the parents gave the exact same names to two sons born later.

A closer look at a parallel family record found later in the book reveals a subtle detail regarding the name Eliphelet [רד״ק]. While the current list shows the exact same name twice, the later account spells them slightly differently to distinguish the two brothers. The older, deceased son is recorded as Elpelet, while the younger brother named in his memory is written as Eliphelet.
