He takes the initiative to reach out, sensing that the young boy has just experienced a prophetic vision directly concerning his own family. This deep sense of dread stems from events that occurred just hours before. Earlier that very same day, another prophet had delivered harsh news to Eli. With that previous warning still fresh, his heart anticipates further trouble, leaving him with a heavy feeling of approaching distress [מלבי״ם].

Driven by this anxiety, the elderly leader speaks directly to the boy, calling out to him with the warm words, "Samuel my son." Despite the heavy burden of the night's events, Samuel responds immediately, answering simply, "Here I am" [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
