The natural water cycle and the mechanics of rainfall reveal a profound wonder of the physical world. Vast amounts of water are suspended high in the sky, gathered within clouds that act as massive containers. These formations carry tremendous weight without collapsing under the burden.

The process begins when the laws of nature cause vapors to rise from the earth, condensing and pooling together in the air within heavy clouds [מלבי״ם, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This gathering is an act of binding and storing, much like a person carefully tying up coins in a secure sack [מצודת ציון, תקות אנוש]. A careful distinction exists between the types of clouds involved in this system. The water initially collects in thick, dense upper clouds. The true marvel is that even the lighter, thinner clouds positioned beneath these heavy formations manage to support the immense weight from above without giving way [מלבי״ם].

The primary approach among commentators is that this suspension of water highlights a wondrous control over how rain falls. Despite the crushing weight of the moisture pressing down, the cloud structure does not tear apart or burst open. If it did, the water would empty all at once, resulting in catastrophic flooding across the earth. Instead, the clouds successfully hold their heavy cargo, allowing it to be safely transported from one location to another [אלשיך].
