Job 26:7Sefaria

The mysterious suspension of the Earth in the vastness of space stands as a profound testament to the power of the Creator. Human comprehension naturally struggles with the reality of a massive world remaining perfectly fixed in place without any physical support, pointing to a miraculous existence that defies basic logic [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God spread out the world over an absolute void, a space completely empty of substance The primary approach among commentators is that this refers to the inhabited regions of the world being laid out across the empty expanse. However, an opposing view suggests that this specifically describes the uninhabited northern parts of the Earth. These regions, submerged beneath the sea, remain in a primordial state of watery emptiness [מלבי״ם]. Taking a different perspective, this spatial arrangement serves as proof of Divine providence. Because there is an empty void in a specific direction, the distance between the Earth and the heavens is asymmetrical. This lack of symmetry proves that the world is not kept in place by natural, evenly distributed pushing or pulling forces from the heavens, but rather by an ongoing miracle [אלשיך].

The concept of the Earth suspended upon absolute nothingness highlights a complete absence of physical matter holding it up, though it can also be understood as a form of restraint or a rein guiding the world When exploring exactly how the Earth maintains its position in the void, commentators present three distinct approaches. The natural and philosophical view proposes that the Earth rests precisely at the center of the heavenly spheres. It balances on a central, indivisible point that possesses no material reality of its own. The world remains stable because all physical elements naturally yearn toward this exact center

In stark contrast, a purely miraculous approach dismisses any natural mechanism. According to this view, no physical element holds the world together. Instead, the Earth hovers in the air solely through the strength of God, sustained by a continuous, supernatural act [רש״י, אלשיך]. A third perspective shifts the focus to the delicate balance between dry land and the oceans. Here, the suspension of the Earth refers to the natural boundaries God established to block the seas from flooding the continents. By restraining the waters, God effectively elevates the dry land above the depths, creating a stable environment where life can thrive [מלבי״ם]. This display of Divine restraint is mirrored in the skies above, where God miraculously binds the upper waters within the clouds, keeping them suspended without spilling until He commands the rain to fall [רמב״ן].
