יהושע, פרק כ״ג, פסוק י״א

Joshua 23:11Sefaria

Loyalty to God requires absolute devotion and a firm separation from surrounding influences. The Israelites are warned to maintain an exclusive relationship with God and to avoid any ties with the neighboring peoples. This level of dedication demands extreme caution to protect against the deep harm and danger that comes from drawing close to these foreign nations [מלבי״ם].

This carefulness is a matter of spiritual survival. Guarding this boundary is essential for the very existence of the soul itself [מצודת דוד]. Because the soul is the most precious and honorable part of a person, there is a strict duty to protect it from being lost or destroyed [אברבנאל]. The ultimate goal of safeguarding the soul is to foster a pure love for God. This love demands absolute exclusivity, meaning a person must not allow any competing love to enter their heart [אברבנאל]. Achieving this complete devotion requires total distance from the surrounding nations, as true and perfect love naturally means rejecting the enemies of the One you love [מלבי״ם].

The demand for this exclusive loyalty can be understood through a simple comparison. Imagine a great leader who steps in to help a group of people, personally fighting off their enemies. It would be deeply inappropriate for those rescued individuals to then make peace with the very enemies who attacked them; rather, they owe their complete obedience to the leader who saved them. In the same way, because God fought for the Israelites against their adversaries, forming alliances or showing affection toward those nations would be a profound betrayal. If the Israelites turn their backs on God and attach themselves to these foreign groups, God will withdraw His help. He will no longer drive out the enemy peoples, and instead, those nations will become a dangerous snare and a stumbling block for the Israelites [אברבנאל].
