As his life draws to a close, Joshua delivers a final message of farewell and guidance to the people. Recognizing that his death is near, he embraces the responsibility to instruct and gently rebuke the nation, following the established tradition of Jacob and Moses before their passing [חומת אנך]. He announces that he is taking the path of all the earth, indicating that his death is imminent, whether it occurs that very day or in the near future [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. He emphasizes his departure to make it clear that he will no longer be present to witness what happens to them in the years to come [מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].

Even though Joshua will no longer be with them, his absence will not diminish God's watchful care over the nation. He urges the people to deeply internalize that their past successes were not the result of blind chance. The unbroken chain of positive events serves as clear proof of a guiding, protective hand orchestrating their survival [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. He reminds them that every single detail of God's good promises has been completely fulfilled. All the miracles, moments of salvation, divine assistance, and the successful conquest of the land materialized exactly as foretold [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

To drive this point home, Joshua emphasizes the fulfilled promises in a twofold manner, highlighting two distinct aspects of God's word. On a quantitative level, every single promise was delivered, with not a single one missing. On a qualitative level, each individual promise was realized perfectly, complete in all its finest details [מלבי״ם].

Joshua's primary goal in recounting these blessings is not simply to inspire gratitude. Instead, he is building a logical argument that serves as a severe warning for the future. He explains that just as the positive promises were completely fulfilled, proving God's active involvement, the promised punishments will also become a reality if the people sin and break the covenant.
