The drawing of the borders of the Land of Israel shifts to its northern boundary, beginning at the Mediterranean Sea and moving inland. The central landmark for this northern line is a prominent mountain. Commentators emphasize a crucial distinction: this mountain must not be confused with the well-known mountain of the exact same name where Aaron the High Priest died. While the site of Aaron's death is located in the south or southeast of the land, the mountain marking the northern border sits at the extreme northwestern edge [שד״ל, רש״ר הירש, העמק דבר]. Topographically, it stands precisely at this northwestern corner. Its peak slopes directly down into the sea, causing the waters to surround it both on its inner side, which faces the Land of Israel, and on its outer side [רש״י, שפתי חכמים].

The action required to establish this specific border is understood in two distinct ways. The primary approach among commentators is that it refers to setting a boundary, marking a line, or tracing a clear route [רשב״ם, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This involves creating a distinct mark [שד״ל] or drawing a direct, intentional line from one point to another, much like an eagle gliding steadily toward a defined target [רש״ר הירש].

In contrast, another perspective understands the action as one of sloping and turning. According to this view, it describes the borderline physically turning and slanting from the west northward toward the mountain, resembling the shape of a sloped structure [רש״י]. More broadly, it simply reflects the boundary line turning and advancing directly toward the mountain peak [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
