Psalms 1:6Sefaria

כִּֽי־יוֹדֵ֣עַ יְ֭הֹוָה דֶּ֣רֶךְ צַדִּיקִ֑ים וְדֶ֖רֶךְ רְשָׁעִ֣ים תֹּאבֵֽד׃ {פ}

A profound contrast exists between the destiny of those who walk a straight path and those who choose evil. This reality reveals the core relationship between the Creator and humanity, showing the natural outcome of a life tied to or disconnected from divine care. The primary approach among commentators is that God's knowledge of the righteous is not merely an intellectual awareness of facts. Rather, it represents active supervision, love, and closeness. God pays careful attention to their journey, actively guiding and helping them so they do not stumble.

This connection operates on multiple levels. [המאירי] explains that the relationship is mutual. As a righteous person strives to understand the Creator to the best of his ability, God responds with precise, personalized care tailored to that individual's understanding and good deeds. This bond also involves practical help from heaven, as God actively distances the righteous from sin and helps them achieve purity [אלשיך]. Furthermore, [מלבי״ם] describes this connection as a deep, inseparable bond. Because the righteous pursue spiritual perfection and devotion to God, they attach themselves to His eternal awareness, thereby becoming eternal themselves.

In complete contrast, the journey of the wicked ends in ruin. Their path is despised by God and removed from His presence [רש״י]. Unlike the righteous who enjoy personal guidance, the wicked forfeit divine protection and are entirely abandoned to the blind, random chances of the world [מצודת דוד]. Some suggest that this ruin happens naturally, as a life built on evil lacks a stable foundation to withstand the events of time [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Because the wicked chase after temporary, fleeting desires, they fail to connect with God's eternal reality. Consequently, their journey ends in total loss, fading away as if it never existed at all [מלבי״ם].

Looking toward the future and the world to come, this divide explains the ultimate fate of both groups. God gathers the eternal souls of the righteous to reward them and satisfy them with His goodness. On the other hand, the souls of the wicked face absolute destruction, with no hope of rising again after death [רד״ק, אבן עזרא]. Ultimately, they are permanently severed and completely cut off from the spiritual level and the community of the righteous [מאירי].
