תהלים, פרק קל״ח, פסוק ג׳

Psalms 138:3Sefaria

בְּי֣וֹם קָ֭רָֽאתִי וַֽתַּעֲנֵ֑נִי תַּרְהִבֵ֖נִי בְנַפְשִׁ֣י עֹֽז׃

When a person cries out to God in moments of deep distress, the divine response goes far beyond a simple physical rescue. It sparks a profound internal transformation, filling the individual with renewed energy and courage. During times of trouble and wandering, an individual may call out from the depths of despair, and God steps in to pull them out, bringing them to a place of safety and security [רד״ק, מאירי]. This direct and immediate response, which is sometimes miraculous, stands in sharp contrast to the behavior of human kings. Mortal rulers often hide away in their palaces, completely ignoring the desperate cries of those seeking their help [מלבי״ם].

Following this rescue, the individual experiences a surge of inner power. The primary approach among commentators is that God grants a profound sense of strength, bravery, and empowerment [אבן עזרא, מצודת ציון, מאירי]. Others suggest this experience brings a feeling of greatness [רש״י] or an awakening of inner elevation [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. God acts on two levels simultaneously: He strengthens the person as a whole while also planting a deep, enduring strength directly within their soul [אבן עזרא].

This newfound strength takes root in several meaningful ways. On the level of faith, the experience of being saved grants a person immense inner power to believe in God. It brings a clear realization that He is the only God who actively watches over humanity [רד״ק], providing the courage to persist and grow stronger in serving the Creator [מצודת דוד].

On a deeper spiritual level, the very fact that God answers a prayer brings such overwhelming joy that it adds a new layer of holiness to the physical body. The soul, which is already holy by nature, receives an extra measure of power and intensity. This entire process is a powerful testament to the deep attachment and closeness that exists between God and humanity [אלשיך]. Furthermore, this resilience highlights that God originally created the human soul with an inherent capacity for power and bravery [מאירי]. When God answers the prayer of a righteous person, it reveals the soul's true nature as a piece of the divine. It grants the soul the ultimate confidence that through its tight bond with God, even the kings of the earth will recognize His greatness when they witness how He answers the prayers of those who call upon Him [מלבי״ם].
