Beyond physical health, this divine guarding extends to the spiritual realm, protecting the individual from the pull of the evil inclination [תורה תמימה].
As a result of his righteous actions, the person experiences profound happiness and success. He is granted a longer life than his contemporaries [אבן עזרא] and is able to truly enjoy the fruits of his good deeds while still in this world [אלשיך]. His continued success earns him universal respect, leading others to praise and honor him [רד״ק, תורה תמימה, מצודת דוד, מאירי].
The promise also includes an assurance that God will not abandon the compassionate person to the desires and whims of his enemies [רד״ק, מצודת ציון, מאירי, שטיינזלץ]. The primary approach among commentators views this as an expression of absolute trust that God will never leave the individual at the mercy of those who hope for his downfall [מצודת דוד].
This rescue from enemies takes on broader social and communal meanings as well.
