תהלים, פרק ס״א, פסוק ד׳

Psalms 61:4Sefaria

כִּֽי־הָיִ֣יתָ מַחְסֶ֣ה לִ֑י מִגְדַּל־עֹ֝֗ז מִפְּנֵ֥י אוֹיֵֽב׃

A person facing adversity often draws strength from past salvation. A history of divine protection provides the confidence to continue seeking help in the present, sparking a deep desire to remain close to God forever.

The primary approach among commentators is that God serves as a constant, eternal source of protection, acting as a heavily fortified fortress [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The psalmist has experienced this shelter many times before. Because God has repeatedly saved him from physical enemies who plotted to harm him and drive him away, he feels completely secure that he can continue to rely on His protection [רד״ק, אבן עזרא, מאירי].

Beyond physical rescue from flesh-and-blood foes, other commentators understand this conflict on a spiritual level, identifying the enemy as a metaphysical force. One perspective views this enemy as the evil inclination. In this light, God's protection is what prevents a spiritual decline that would ultimately lead to exile and oppression under foreign powers [אלשיך]. Alternatively, the enemy represents a heavenly accuser attempting to cause harm. Rather than leaving the individual to face this alone, God personally steps in to provide defense and secure vindication in judgment [חומת אנך].

Taking the spiritual concept further, the image of a strong tower can also symbolize the Torah itself. According to this view, the shelter God provides is the mental and spiritual strength to continue studying complex laws even during times of crisis. When a person manages to learn and uncover new insights in the Torah despite facing severe hardship, it sends a clear message to the enemy. It proves that no harsh decree has been finalized against them, because the continuous study of Torah serves as an impenetrable fortress of strength and protection [חומת אנך].
