Psalms 61:6Sefaria

A deep connection exists between a person's cry in times of trouble and the divine salvation that follows, bringing stability and a lasting heritage. In moments of crisis, people often make promises to God, later offering thanks when those prayers are answered and they are granted a place among the faithful. Although the acts of hearing and giving are expressed as past events, they can be understood as looking toward the future. In this light, they form a plea for God to hear the vows made by David during his exile and to bring him back safely to the Land of Israel [רד״ק].

However, the primary approach among commentators is that these words reflect vows made in the past. They represent promises made when going out to war, paired with a request for God's help and rescue from enemies [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ, מאירי]. Others view these promises through a more spiritual lens, seeing them as commitments made specifically to earn the right to dwell in God's tent [אבן עזרא]. Taking a more poetic approach, the vows themselves can even be seen as an abstract entity that speaks up, asking God to add days to the king's life [מלבי״ם].

God's willingness to answer such promises is not a new occurrence. He listened to the vows of the Israelites long ago in the desert as they prepared to conquer the land, an act that symbolized their true freedom from slavery [אלשיך]. The exact nature of the heritage granted to those who fear God is understood in two distinct ways. One approach views this inheritance as physical and territorial. It represents the Land of Israel itself [אבן עזרא, אלשיך], or the enemy territories gained after a military victory [מצודת דוד]. Similarly, it can refer to Israelite cities that were once captured by enemies and have now been returned by God to His faithful followers [רש״י, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Conversely, a second approach understands the inheritance as purely spiritual. In this view, the heritage is the profound privilege of living and remaining in the Tent of Meeting or the Temple [רד״ק], or simply the fitting reward given to those who stand faithfully before God [מאירי].
