Psalms 81:14Sefaria

An emotional plea from God opens a door of hope, making it clear that the gates of repentance are never locked for the nation, even after they have sinned and faced punishment. While this call is largely understood as a simple condition for a better future, it also carries the deep weight of a longing request, as if God is actually begging His people to listen to His voice This divine wish stands in sharp contrast to the Israelites' past behavior. God's desire for them to listen and walk in His paths is the exact opposite of their historical refusal to hear Him and their tendency to follow terrible advice [אבן עזרא].

Because of this strong contrast with the past, the primary approach among commentators is that this message is aimed directly at the present and the future. God is encouraging the nation, urging them not to give up hope for redemption despite their past crimes and current exile. Their destiny remains entirely in their own hands. If they simply choose to return and listen to God, a massive shift in their fate will take place Furthermore, the moment they begin to listen to Him, even just a little bit, God will immediately defeat their enemies and save them

A unique perspective attempts to lighten the guilt placed directly on the Israelites by separating the subjects of this divine call. In this view, the initial frustration is directed toward the mixed multitude—the foreign groups who joined the Israelites and actively led them into sin. The second part of the hope focuses on the Israelites themselves. If only that mixed multitude had listened to God's warnings, the Israelites would have naturally followed God's ways instead of being dragged down into destructive behaviors [אלשיך].
