Psalms 81:3Sefaria

שְֽׂאוּ־זִ֭מְרָה וּתְנוּ־תֹ֑ף כִּנּ֖וֹר נָעִ֣ים עִם־נָֽבֶל׃

Praising God is a profound act that merges the human voice with the rich sounds of musical instruments, forming an essential part of divine service. The call to sing is understood as a fundamental requirement in the Temple, where raising one's voice loudly in song is a core act of worship [תורה תמימה]. The primary approach among commentators is that this involves a powerful, vocal outpouring of praise.

Alongside the human voice, instruments are brought into the celebration. The instruction to sound the tambourine is generally seen as a directive to strike it or place a hand upon it to produce its beat [רד״ק, מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ], though some interpret it simply as a call to prepare and bring the instrument forward [מאירי]. This musical direction extends to playing stringed instruments as well [אבן עזרא]. The harp is noted for producing sweet and agreeable melodies [מצודת ציון]. Alongside it is the lyre. While there is a discussion among the sages regarding whether the harp and lyre are actually the same instrument or if they differ in their number of strings and pegs, the lyre is considered exceptional. Its sound is so magnificent that it outshines and humbles all other musical instruments [רש״י]. In a broader sense, naming these specific tools of music represents the use of all types of instruments in worship [רד״ק].

The specific choice and volume of these instruments actually reflect the spiritual condition of the people. When the nation reaches a high level of righteousness, they possess the spiritual strength to sing powerfully alongside the loud, booming beat of the tambourine, and their voices will still ring out clearly. However, during times when the people are on a lower spiritual level, it is more fitting to use the quieter, gentler sounds of the harp and lyre, avoiding the overwhelming noise of the tambourine. Regardless of the era, the ultimate purpose remains the same: to sing and rejoice in God's guidance, tuning the volume and the choice of instruments to the spiritual capacity of the generation [אלשיך].
