תהלים, פרק פ״ז, פסוק א׳

Psalms 87:1Sefaria

לִבְנֵי־קֹ֭רַח מִזְמ֣וֹר שִׁ֑יר יְ֝סוּדָת֗וֹ בְּהַרְרֵי־קֹֽדֶשׁ׃

A song of praise is dedicated to Jerusalem, celebrating the profound holiness and spiritual elevation of both the city and the people who live there. The composition is entrusted to the sons of Korah, the family appointed to lead the singing in the Temple [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. The exact authorship of the song is a matter of discussion. King David may have composed it and handed it over to the Korah family to perform, or perhaps one of the family members wrote it themselves [רד״ק]. Another view identifies the author as a descendant of the prophet Samuel [אבן עזרא].

Beyond their official role, the Korah family had a deeply personal connection to the joy expressed in this song. For generations, they carried the pain of their father being swallowed by the earth. However, when the Temple was destroyed and its gates sank into the ground, they found a unique sense of hope. They understood that when God eventually raises the Temple gates back from the earth, their father will rise along with them. Despite this personal connection, they clarify that the true foundation of their song is not their own gain, but rather God's deep love for this sacred place [אלשיך].

The primary approach among commentators is that the core theme and foundation of the entire composition is the praise of Zion and Jerusalem. The city was chosen not only for its inherent holiness but also because it is an environment uniquely suited to foster wisdom, as the very atmosphere of the land makes a person wise [מאירי]. Furthermore, the holiness of the area extends across multiple mountains. This reflects the physical geography of the region, as Jerusalem is not built on a single peak. Instead, it rests upon several different heights, most notably Mount Zion and Mount Moriah, where the Temple stands, as well as the various mountains that surround the city [רד״ק, מלבי״ם].
