God's communication with Moses marks a moment of severe crisis, delivering a piercing diagnosis of the Israelites' true character and the gravity of their situation. This moment stands alone as a profound escalation in divine anger. Previously, the consequence of the people's actions was the nullification of the Tablets of the Covenant, undoing forty days of Moses's intense labor. Now, however, the situation worsens drastically, as God expresses a desire to completely destroy the entire nation. This extreme response is particularly striking because the Israelites were considered the very purpose of creation, and God had previously showered them with deep love [העמק דבר].

This harsh judgment is the result of God engaging in a deep, penetrating observation of the people's character, clearly revealing their true essence and actions before Him [ביאור יש״ר, אוהב גר]. Through this profound examination, God concludes that the Israelites are a fundamentally stubborn nation, completely unwilling to accept His authority [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their defiance is compared to people who absolutely refuse to bow their heads to accept a yoke. Instead, they stand rigidly upright, acting as though their necks are completely stiff and lack joints [בכור שור].
