Esther 7:1Sefaria

The second royal banquet stands as the dramatic climax of the story, a moment where complex relationships reach their tipping point and hidden shifts in power come to light. The intimate gathering between the king, the queen, and the highest minister sets the stage for fateful changes. The king and Haman arrive at the feast completely alone, unaccompanied by any other royal officials [אבן עזרא]. Their entrance itself reveals a shift in dynamics. Rather than Haman trailing behind as a simple subordinate, the two men walk in together as equal partners [מנות הלוי].

The atmosphere of this second gathering marks a sharp contrast to the first. Previously, the king attended with reluctance, burdened by jealousy and deep suspicion regarding why his wife had invited Haman. By the time of the second feast, however, his doubts have vanished. Convinced of her loyalty, his jealousy fades, and he fully restores her honor, treating her with the complete respect due to a queen

This newfound ease is reflected in the shared experience of the meal. Earlier, the gathering was simply a banquet they attended, but now there is a distinct emphasis on drinking and dining together. Commentators offer several reasons for this shift. One perspective suggests that during the initial feast, the queen and her attendants were still in the middle of their fast, preventing her from participating. With the days of fasting completed, she is finally able to drink with her guests [אלשיך]. Another approach views this through the lens of extreme caution. At the first gathering, she hesitated to eat or drink in Haman's company, fearing it might trigger the king's fierce jealousy. Once she feels entirely secure in the king's affection, she freely joins them without fear

Ultimately, this shared dining creates a much higher degree of intimacy. While the first meeting was a standard meal, the second is carefully designed to foster a sense of deep fellowship and shared joy. This close, relaxed atmosphere is no accident. It is deliberately orchestrated to inflate Haman's ego, making him feel like an intimate, personal friend of the royal couple. The strategy relies on the understanding that building up his overwhelming pride is the necessary final step before his sudden and complete downfall
