יחזקאל, פרק כ״ב, פסוק כ״ב

Ezekiel 22:22Sefaria

כְּהִתּ֥וּךְ כֶּ֙סֶף֙ בְּת֣וֹךְ כּ֔וּר כֵּ֖ן תֻּתְּכ֣וּ בְתוֹכָ֑הּ וִֽידַעְתֶּם֙ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֣י יְהֹוָ֔ה שָׁפַ֥כְתִּי חֲמָתִ֖י עֲלֵיכֶֽם׃ {פ}

The suffering and distress of the people trapped inside Jerusalem are compared to the intense heat of a furnace melting down metal. Held within the city walls, the people will experience the crushing pressure of the siege, enduring a fierce fire of hardship [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם, רד״ק].

While the people were previously compared to other metals like copper, tin, iron, and lead, they are now specifically likened to silver. This shift carries multiple layers of meaning. Because silver melts more slowly than lighter metals like tin and lead, it indicates that the destruction and ruin inside the city will not be swift. Instead, the suffering will drag on for a long time through the agony of hunger, plague, and the sword [רד״ק]. At the same time, silver melts more easily than iron, showing that the people will ultimately break and melt completely under the heavy pressure [מלבי״ם].

The image of silver also serves as a reminder of the nation's original state, a time when they were pure and clean like unblemished silver [רד״ק]. Consequently, the melting process is not merely a punishment, but a tool for correction. Just as a silversmith melts down metal to burn away its impurities, the intense suffering is designed to refine the people, cleanse them of their sins, and guide them back to the right path [מלבי״ם].

The ultimate goal of this painful refining process is a profound realization. Through their intense suffering, the people will come to recognize God's active role in their lives. They will understand that the destruction of their city is not a random tragedy, but a deliberate punishment and a direct response from God for their actions [מצודת דוד, מלבי״ם].
