The experience of being uprooted from one's homeland and scattered across the globe is often viewed merely as a harsh penalty for wrongdoing. However, this profound displacement serves a much deeper purpose than simple retribution. It acts as a necessary process of refinement designed to cleanse the people.

God initiates this purification through a gradual process of dispersion [מצודת ציון]. Rather than happening all at once, the people are first scattered among neighboring nations, and from there, they are pushed outward into increasingly distant lands through a series of successive exiles [מלבי״ם]. The ultimate objective of this relentless wandering is to bring an end to the spiritual decay that had taken root within the nation [רש״י, מצודת ציון]. As the people are moved from country to country, God actively works to wear away and erase their deeply ingrained impurities [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ].

This process of spiritual cleansing unfolds in two complementary ways. On one hand, the sheer hardship and suffering that come with living in exile naturally humble the people, eventually guiding them toward sincere repentance [מלבי״ם]. At the same time, the very reality of being displaced physically removes them from the environment where their worst practices flourished. By being torn away from their land, they are completely cut off from the practice of idol worship, which is considered the ultimate impurity. This forced separation ensures that they are completely purified from their past [רד״ק].
