The physical layout of the sacred complex is mapped out through a series of precise and deliberate movements. The measuring process continues as the angel turns toward the west, a direction associated with the sea [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ].

His path to reach this area is carefully chosen. Rather than simply retracing his steps backward from the southern side to the western side, the angel takes a circular route. He walks all the way around through the eastern and northern sides until he arrives back at the west. After completing this full circuit and reaching the western edge, he measures that side from north to south [מלבי״ם].
