Ezekiel 42:12Sefaria

The architectural vision of the future Temple is characterized by strict symmetry and a precise connection between its various areas. The layout of the entrances and chambers on the southern side highlights a carefully planned path leading to one of the most important focal points of the Temple service. The structural alignment of the southern chambers perfectly mirrored those in the north, with their entrances facing the exact same direction These chambers were positioned at the four corners of the courtyard [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

At the head of this pathway stood a distinct entrance. Commentators offer different perspectives on its exact function. It may have served as a southern exit leading toward the outer boundary wall of the complex [מלבי״ם]. Alternatively, it functioned as an additional entry point at the very beginning of the route that guided people into the inner courtyard [מצודת דוד].

This path faced a unique stone structure, whose nature is understood in several ways. The primary approach among commentators describes it as a stepped, beautiful, and highly fitting architectural feature Others suggest its design was intimately related to music and melody [מצודת ציון], or that it served a protective function, acting as a physical barrier to guard the sacred areas and separate them from the outside world [מלבי״ם].

In practical terms, the primary approach among commentators is that this structure was the designated platform for the Levites. This was the exact location where they stood to sing and play musical instruments while sacrifices were being offered. This specific platform was distinct from the famous fifteen steps used during the joyous Water Drawing Festival; rather, it was a raised barrier that formally separated the courtyard of the Israelites from the courtyard of the Priests [רד״ק, אברבנאל]. The entire pathway and the Levites' platform were situated on the eastern side of the complex, positioned to directly greet those who entered the Temple grounds from the east
