וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ אֶל־לוֹט֙ וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ ל֔וֹ אַיֵּ֧ה הָאֲנָשִׁ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֥אוּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ הַלָּ֑יְלָה הוֹצִיאֵ֣ם אֵלֵ֔ינוּ וְנֵדְעָ֖ה אֹתָֽם׃

In the dead of night, an angry mob surrounds a home, demanding the surrender of its newly arrived guests. This dramatic confrontation exposes the deep moral corruption and social rot that ultimately leads to the total destruction of the city.

The crowd insists on gaining access to the strangers. Some suggest that the townspeople simply want to interrogate them, suspecting the newcomers might be spies, thieves, or enemy agents [רד״ק, הטור הארוך]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that the mob's intentions are far more sinister, demanding the guests for the purpose of sexual assault. This is evident from the homeowner's desperate response. He attempts to protect his guests by offering his two virgin daughters to the crowd instead. If the mob were merely conducting a security investigation, offering them young women would be a completely illogical solution [בכור שור, שפתי חכמים, גור אריה, ביאור יש״ר, חזקוני].

The drive behind this horrific act does not stem from mere physical desire, but from a profound urge to humiliate, degrade, and abuse the visitors [מלבי״ם, ביאור יש״ר]. The root of this society's sin lies in its arrogance, selfishness, and intense hatred toward the poor and outsiders. As a wealthy and peaceful city, the residents live in constant fear that others will come to take advantage of their prosperity. To prevent this, they treat strangers with extreme cruelty, intentionally making a public spectacle of their abuse. They hope that rumors of their brutality will spread, ensuring no one ever dares to cross their borders again [רמב״ן, שד״ל, ביאור יש״ר]. Their total lack of shame and extreme moral decline is evident in how they loudly and publicly announce their wicked intentions before acting [ביאור יש״ר]. Interestingly, this massive gathering consists solely of men, as the women detest such abominable acts and remain in their homes [שד״ל].

Amidst this overwhelming evil, the host stands alone in his willingness to welcome strangers. His unique behavior might be because he is an outsider himself [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Alternatively, the townspeople may only tolerate his hospitality and turn a blind eye to his actions because of his vast personal wealth and the deep respect they hold for his relative, Abraham [רמב״ן].

The ultimate punishment for this city is far more severe and final than that of other sinful nations. This is not only due to their unmatched cruelty but also because of their geographical location. The city sits within the Land of Israel, which is God's personal inheritance. This land cannot tolerate abominations and inherently rejects corrupt nations. Therefore, the total annihilation of the city serves as an eternal warning to the Israelites who are destined to inherit the land, cautioning them never to adopt such wicked ways [רמב״ן].
