Genesis 19:36Sefaria

The immediate pregnancy of Lot's two daughters is an extraordinary event, as it is highly unusual for a virgin to conceive from her first encounter Driven by a desperate need to ensure their pregnancy, the daughters took deliberate and painful physical measures. They controlled themselves and manually broke their own hymens before lying with their father [רש"י, שפתי חכמים, ברכת אשר על התורה]. This independent action is understood from earlier descriptions of their preparations [משכיל לדוד]. Scholars offer different perspectives on how to define this preparatory act. Some explain that they removed their "nakedness," focusing on the act of exposure [פענח רזא]. However, the primary approach among commentators is that they removed "their testimony," since the hymen serves as the definitive physical proof of a woman's virginity Taking a different approach, some note that from a biological standpoint, conception from a first encounter can occur naturally without intervention in rare cases or at an older age [פרדס יוסף]. Furthermore, the rapid conception, particularly from the seed of a heavily intoxicated man, is viewed as an act of miraculous divine providence designed to bring forth two great nations [מלבי"ם].

The speed of their conception also serves as proof of their pure intentions. Their sole objective was to ensure the continuation of the human race. Therefore, the moment they realized they had conceived, they ceased their relations with their father entirely [רד"ק]. Still, the origins of their pregnancy carry a tone of disgrace, standing in sharp contrast to other conceptions in biblical history that are described with praise [ברכת אשר על התורה]. Yet, the circumstances also hint at a deeper dynamic: the act was fueled in part by Lot's own hidden lust, whereas his daughters acted purely for the sake of heaven. Because of their righteous intentions, the daughters were rewarded. Their female descendants were eventually permitted to join the Israelites and even take part in the royal lineage of the House of David, even though their male descendants were strictly excluded [אלשיך].

While both daughters shared the same underlying motive, a profound difference in their personal modesty ultimately shaped the future of the nations they bore. The older daughter acted with brazenness, naming her son Moab to publicly declare that he was conceived by her father. Because of this lack of shame, God later permitted the Israelites to cause distress to her descendants. In contrast, the younger daughter acted with modesty and discretion, naming her son Ben-Ammi to conceal his exact origins. As a reward for her refined behavior, God commanded the Israelites never to provoke the Ammonites [צאינה וראינה].
