Genesis 19:1Sefaria

The transition from the bright, welcoming tent of Abraham to the dark, cruel reality of Sodom sets the stage for a dramatic rescue and impending doom. Out of the three visitors who previously appeared to Abraham, only two arrive at the city. The third had already completed his specific tasks of bringing the news of a child to Sarah and healing Abraham, and had subsequently departed. The remaining two each carry a distinct mission: one is sent to overturn Sodom, and the other is tasked with saving Lot

A stark shift occurs in how these messengers are perceived. While they previously appeared as ordinary individuals to Abraham, they now take on a distinctly heavenly form. The primary approach among commentators is that this difference reflects the spiritual levels of the observers. Abraham was intimately accustomed to divine revelations, so the messengers appeared to him as regular people. Lot, however, stood on a lower spiritual plane; struck with awe, he perceived them in their full angelic state Alternatively, the contrast highlights the presence of God. In Abraham's tent, where God's Presence rested, the messengers paled in comparison and seemed like simple men. In Sodom, a place entirely devoid of the Divine Presence, their angelic stature was unmistakable Others suggest they took on a spiritual, invisible form so that only Lot could see them, protecting them from the cruel townspeople [אלשיך]. A further perspective notes that while actively engaged in their earthly mission, they were viewed as mere men, reverting to their angelic title only once their initial task was complete

The timing of their arrival in the evening is deeply deliberate. Although they could have traveled swiftly, they lingered outside the city as messengers of mercy. They delayed their entry in the hope that Abraham's ongoing prayers might successfully mitigate the harsh judgment and save Sodom Furthermore, arriving under the cover of darkness provided a practical advantage. It allowed Lot to bring them into his home secretly, evading the townspeople who had enacted strict, unforgiving laws against hospitality The nighttime arrival also served as a final test for the city, checking if even a single resident would dare to offer shelter to strangers after dark [ביאור יש״ר].

At that time, Lot was positioned at the city gate. This location was the hub of commerce, public gathering, and justice, indicating that on this very day, Lot had been appointed as the chief judge of Sodom His presence at the gate also served personal and moral purposes. It allowed him to distance himself from the residential neighborhoods of the wicked [הטור הארוך, פענח רזא], while also giving him the opportunity to intercept passing travelers. By waiting at the edge of the city, he could discreetly guide them to his home before they fell victim to the locals' abuse [ביאור יש״ר].

Upon noticing the visitors, Lot immediately stood to greet them. Despite living in Sodom for many years, he had preserved the core value of hospitality learned in Abraham's household, instantly recognizing the visitors as servants of God However, unlike Abraham who famously ran to greet his guests, Lot merely stood up. This was a practical limitation; due to the evening darkness, he could not spot them from a distance and only noticed them when they were already very close Overcome with reverence by their majestic and awe-inspiring appearance [ספורנו, אברבנאל], Lot bowed deeply, lowering himself until his face and nose physically touched the earth [אבן עזרא, מחוקקי יהודה].
