פרשת נח

Genesis 7:15Sefaria

The gathering of the animals at the Ark represents a moment of profound majesty, where all of nature submitted itself to God's providence and to humanity. This event was entirely miraculous and defied the normal rules of the natural world. The primary approach among commentators [רמב״ן, רבנו בחיי, קאסוטו] is that the animals did not gather slowly over a long period. Instead, guided by the spirit and will of God, they all arrived on their own during the exact same day the rain began, brought together in a single moment.

This phenomenon was especially remarkable given the natural instincts of wild creatures. Typically, animals flee from human presence and instinctively avoid confined, enclosed spaces. Here, however, they willingly approached Noah and entered the Ark [מלבי״ם]. In this gathering, humanity is seen at the height of its original glory, as every family of the animal kingdom came to a human being, viewing him as their protector and the savior of their continued existence [רש״ר הירש]. The arrival happened exactly at that moment; they did not secretly gather beforehand [קאסוטו].

The precision of this miracle is further highlighted by the way the animals arrived in pairs. Whether a specific species required a single pair or seven pairs, they came perfectly partnered [העמק דבר]. The exact number required for each species arrived—never one too many, and never one too few [מלבי״ם]. Furthermore, these were the very same animals that were originally chosen for this purpose. Not a single creature wandered off into the wilderness or was lost along the way, and no uninvited animals mixed into the group [רד״ק].

The narrative builds in detail, moving from the general arrival of different species to the specific pairing of the animals, which sets the stage for the upcoming distinction between male and female [ביאור יש״ר]. Ultimately, the emphasis on every breathing creature serves as a final, grand census. It ensures that a complete and perfect representation of every living, breathing being on earth presented itself at the Ark, with not a single species missing [קאסוטו, מלבי״ם].
