פרשת נח

Genesis 7:5Sefaria

וַיַּ֖עַשׂ נֹ֑חַ כְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־צִוָּ֖הוּ יְהֹוָֽה׃

Moments before the devastating waters of the Flood are unleashed, a brief pause highlights Noah's absolute obedience to God's instructions. This unwavering compliance reflects profound faith, as Noah completed all his preparations long before seeing a single drop of rain or any sign of the impending disaster [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. From a literary standpoint, this serves as a concluding summary of the preceding events [קאסוטו], encompassing everything Noah was instructed to do: building the Ark, gathering food, and collecting the animals [הטור הארוך]. Every divine instruction was faithfully translated into concrete action [העמק דבר].

Beyond this general summary, commentators debate the specific action Noah took at this moment. One approach suggests that the action refers to Noah's arrival at the Ark [רש״י, שד״ל]. This distinguishes the moment from the earlier construction of the vessel, marking the arrival itself as a distinct and significant act of obedience [ברכת אשר על התורה]. However, opinions vary regarding the nature of this arrival. Some maintain that Noah, his family, and the animals fully entered the Ark at this time [רד״ק]. Others argue that they merely approached and gathered around the structure, waiting outside until the rising waters eventually forced them inside [גור אריה, אבן עזרא, מחוקקי יהודה].

This idea of merely standing near the Ark raises a question: how does waiting outside fulfill a direct Commandment, especially since the wicked people of the generation also gathered around to watch the spectacle [לבוש האורה]? To resolve this, some explain that the action encompasses all the final external preparations Noah had to complete before officially moving inside [דברי דוד]. Alternatively, during the seven days leading up to the Flood, Noah may have gone in and out of the Ark repeatedly to arrange necessary equipment. This constant activity explains why Noah is mentioned alone at this juncture, without his family [ביאור יש״ר].

A different approach completely rejects the idea that Noah's action was entering the Ark, noting that his actual entry is explicitly detailed later on. Instead, this perspective argues that Noah's specific act of obedience was gathering the animals [אור החיים]. While the animals destined purely for survival miraculously arrived at the Ark on their own in pairs, Noah was required to actively seek out and bring seven pairs of the pure animals and birds, which would later be used for sacrifices [הטור הארוך, מלבי״ם, ביאור יש״ר]. The emphasis here is on Noah's precise execution of this complex task, ensuring the pure animals were gathered exactly as commanded, in stark contrast to the others that simply arrived on their own [אור החיים].
