Hosea 7:15Sefaria

A tragic gap exists between God’s loving intentions toward the Israelites and their ungrateful response. While He works constantly to support and guide them, the people completely misinterpret His actions.

God’s involvement in their lives takes different forms to ensure their survival and growth. One perspective views His actions through the lens of discipline and education. Like a father correcting a rebellious son, God brings hardships upon the people and sends prophets to guide them back to the right path [רש"י, אברבנאל]. These struggles are never intended to cause harm. Rather, they are carefully designed to prevent the people's total ruin, awaken them to repentance, and ultimately restore their strength [אבן עזרא, מלבי"ם]. Alternatively, God's support is seen during times of triumph. Just as binding an object tightly gives it stability and power, God fortifies the Israelites, granting them success and military victories over their enemies

Despite this constant divine support, the Israelites respond with profound negativity, reacting poorly to both forms of God's intervention. During periods of prosperity and military might, they deny His goodness. Instead of recognizing His guiding hand, they attribute their triumphs to blind chance or their own physical power, completely ignoring God's providence Conversely, when God introduces hardships to educate and strengthen them, they tragically misunderstand His motives. They mistakenly believe that He wishes to harm them out of hatred. This deep misunderstanding drives them to rebel against God and seek alliances with foreign nations, failing to see that everything He does is ultimately for their own benefit [מלבי"ם, אברבנאל].
