People often fall into the illusion that time erases their wrongdoings or that their actions go unnoticed by God. However, spiritual reality dictates otherwise. Offenses of the past and present do not simply fade away; instead, they actively surround a person and remain fully visible to God.

The primary approach among commentators is that there is a profound mental disconnect occurring among the wrongdoers. They fail to internalize that God remembers all their wickedness, ignoring the reality that every act is permanently recorded before Him [רש"י, רד"ק, שטיינזלץ]. They live under the false assumption that God simply does not see them [אבן עזרא]. This spiritual blindness is rooted in their political and economic success. During difficult times, they genuinely feared divine punishment. Yet, when God sought to heal them and brought them prosperity and secure borders, they misinterpreted this peace. They mistakenly took their comfortable situation as proof that God had forgotten their past offenses, which emboldened them to sin publicly [מלבי"ם].

In response to this misguided thinking, God makes it clear that He remembers every evil act. In fact, there is no need for Him to search through past records, because the wrongdoers' actions are already wrapping around them in the present [מצודת דוד, שטיינזלץ]. These offenses are committed out in the open rather than in secret [אברבנאל], and they stand constantly before God at all times [מלבי"ם]. Ultimately, these very deeds that never escaped His attention will close in on the wrongdoers and bring about their downfall. Only when they finally face the consequences of their actions will they realize that God knew everything all along and is actively holding them accountable [רד"ק].
