וַיִּוָּֽעֲצוּ֙ כׇּל־הַקָּהָ֔ל לַעֲשׂ֕וֹת שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים אֲחֵרִ֑ים וַיַּעֲשׂ֥וּ שִׁבְעַת־יָמִ֖ים שִׂמְחָֽה׃

The decision to extend a religious festival beyond its required time reveals a deep and unusual spiritual awakening among the people. After completing the mandatory seven days of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the participants willingly chose to observe an additional week. This extra time was entirely dedicated to giving thanks, offering sacrifices to God, and experiencing joy [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Such a remarkable extension echoes the double celebrations that took place during the dedication of the first Temple under King Solomon [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

There are different, yet complementary, perspectives regarding the motivation behind this added week. One approach suggests that the people deliberately set aside separate days to celebrate their spiritual renewal. Based on the principle that one should not mix two different occasions of joy, the first seven days were strictly reserved for the joy of the festival itself. Therefore, the people needed additional time to fully celebrate the unique happiness of this specific event [מלבי״ם].

Another perspective focuses on the role of the Levites, suggesting they were the ones who initiated the extra week. Earlier in the festival, the memory of their past sins had clouded their celebration. However, once they achieved atonement, their happiness grew immensely, prompting them to extend the gathering. Throughout these additional days, the priests and Levites joined together in prayer on behalf of the Israelites, and their prayers ascended and were accepted in heaven [רלב״ג].

The addition of these days was established as a separate period, completely distinct from the obligatory festival [מצודת דוד]. Ultimately, the essence of this second week was defined by its practical outcome. It was a time characterized by nothing but pure joy [רש״י].
