II Samuel 23:13Sefaria

During a period of intense military tension, a daring mission unfolds as elite warriors seek to join David at his hidden stronghold while enemy forces gather nearby. Three specific heroes step forward from a larger, distinguished group of officers and great warriors. These men are not ordinary soldiers; they are the heads of the military camps [רש״י, רד״ק] and serve as the commanders over a renowned unit of thirty elite fighters [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Their identities are initially kept hidden to place the focus entirely on the immense bravery of their mission. Only later does it become clear that two of these men are Abishai and Benaiah. The third commander's name is deliberately left out, possibly because he was guilty of certain sins, leading the prophet to omit his name from this record of honor [אברבנאל].

The timing and setting of their journey revolve around the harvest. The primary approach among commentators is that this simply indicates the season when the event takes place However, another perspective suggests a more literal scenario: David has gone out directly to the harvest fields to protect the Israelite workers and their crops from the Philistines, who are attempting to destroy the food supply and starve the nation [אברבנאל]. The warriors make their way down to the cave of Adullam, which serves as much more than a simple hideout. It is a fortified stronghold situated on a high, imposing rock

The exact timeline of this gathering is a matter of debate. It may occur during the difficult years when David is fleeing from Saul and using the cave of Adullam as a refuge [רד״ק]. Alternatively, this event might take place later, during the early days of David's reign over Israel, amidst his initial wars with the Philistines [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל]. Regardless of the exact timing, a significant Philistine presence looms over the area. A highly organized military congregation or raiding unit has gathered and stationed itself in the Valley of Rephaim, located southwest of Jerusalem
