שמואל ב, פרק כ״ג, פסוק כ״ד

II Samuel 23:24Sefaria

עֲשָׂהאֵ֥ל אֲחִֽי־יוֹאָ֖ב בַּשְּׁלֹשִׁ֑ים אֶלְחָנָ֥ן בֶּן־דֹּד֖וֹ בֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃ {ס}

The record of King David's mighty men shifts its focus from exceptional, solitary fighters to a detailed roster of an elite military unit known as the Thirty. Unlike the earlier heroes who served as the king's personal bodyguards, these men functioned as senior army captains, commanding divisions of thousands and hundreds [אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. They were individuals of profound character, upon whom the spirit and wisdom of God rested [אברבנאל].

Leading this distinguished group is Asahel, the brother of Joab, who would later be killed by Abner [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. His position at the top of the roster is intentional, as the warriors are organized according to their rank and greatness, marking him as the most senior and important among them [אברבנאל]. Yet, while he held more honor than his peers, his status was not so uniquely elevated that it removed him from their ranks entirely; thus, he remains counted as an integral part of the Thirty [מצודת דוד]. Following him is Elhanan, the son of Dodo, from the city of Bethlehem [רד״ק, מצודת ציון]. Asahel's placement at the beginning creates a striking narrative frame. Because the list eventually concludes with Uriah the Hittite, it forms a tragic circle, opening and closing with heroes who ultimately met their ends by the sword [אברבנאל].

The title of this elite group raises a numerical question, as the final tally of David's warriors is recorded as thirty-seven. Commentators offer different ways to understand this total. One approach explains that the number includes the thirty men detailed in this specific group, plus the three warriors who famously brought David water, the three supreme heroes mentioned earlier, and Joab, the commanding general who stood above them all [אברבנאל]. Another perspective suggests a different division, reaching the total of thirty-seven by counting the previously mentioned supreme warriors alongside twenty-four men from the core group of the Thirty, and adding seven more fighters of a slightly lower rank [מלבי״ם].
