שמואל ב, פרק ט׳, פסוק א׳

II Samuel 9:1Sefaria

After securing the kingdom, winning decisive battles, and organizing his new government, David turns his attention to the remnants of the previous royal dynasty. Having just established a structured administration and appointed his officials, he seeks a worthy and honorable descendant of Saul to place in a senior government role. This desire stems from his deep commitment to honor the oath he once made to his close friend Jonathan.

A natural question arises regarding David's lack of knowledge about his own former father-in-law's family. In the ancient world, it was standard practice for a new king to execute all members of the previous royal family to prevent future rebellions. Terrified that David would follow this brutal custom, the surviving members of Saul's household went into deep hiding, keeping their whereabouts a strict secret ([מלבי״ם], [ביאור שטיינזלץ]).

Because they were hidden, David is forced to ask publicly if anyone remains alive. He carefully frames his inquiry to assure them that his intentions are purely peaceful. The primary approach among commentators views his public question as a simple, direct attempt to find survivors. However, another perspective links his search to his overall style of leadership. Just as he governs the entire nation with justice and charity, he is determined to extend that exact same standard of kindness to the house of Saul ([אלשיך]).

By specifically declaring that his kindness is for Jonathan's sake, David makes it clear that he is driven by a sacred oath made before God with his beloved friend. This public reassurance is designed to give the hidden survivors the courage to step forward without fear ([מלבי״ם]). Ultimately, the fact that David initiates this search entirely on his own highlights his exceptional character and the genuine goodness of his heart ([רלב״ג]).
