Having just established a structured administration and appointed his officials, he seeks a worthy and honorable descendant of Saul to place in a senior government role. This desire stems from his deep commitment to honor the oath he once made to his close friend Jonathan.

A natural question arises regarding David's lack of knowledge about his own former father-in-law's family. In the ancient world, it was standard practice for a new king to execute all members of the previous royal family to prevent future rebellions.
