This reality explains his residence in Jerusalem. Living in the capital city was expensive and demanding, but his required attendance at the king's daily meals made it necessary. He could not live in another city or even in the suburbs of Jerusalem and commute daily because of his physical condition, as he was lame [מצודת ציון].

His lameness in both legs is a critical detail with a twofold purpose. First, his severe lack of mobility created a practical need for him to live directly next to the palace [מלבי״ם]. Second, his disability explains his overall lack of activity, providing essential background information needed to understand the future events of his life [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
