I Chronicles 12:22Sefaria

Warriors from the tribe of Manasseh joined David during a severe personal and military crisis, proving their immense bravery and loyalty on the battlefield. David had just been sent away by the Philistine leaders. Upon returning to his city of Ziklag, he discovered a devastating scene: Amalekite raiders had attacked and burned the city, taking the wives and children of David and his men as captives. The primary approach among commentators is that the enemy force these newly arrived warriors helped defeat was specifically this Amalekite troop.

The involvement of these men from Manasseh represented a complete partnership and deep dedication. Just as David rushed into battle to rescue his family, these warriors stood firmly by his side, actively participating in the pursuit and the attack on the Amalekite camp [מצודת דוד].

Because of their fierce fighting skills, these warriors earned significant military promotions, though commentators differ on exactly when they were elevated to the rank of army commanders. One perspective suggests that David appointed them to these leadership positions immediately, right in the middle of the pursuit against the Amalekites [מצודת דוד]. In contrast, another view maintains that their promotion occurred later. According to this understanding, it was only after David returned to Judah and arrived in Hebron that he appointed them as commanders over the men of Manasseh who had gathered around him [מלבי״ם].
