I Chronicles 12:18Sefaria

וַיֵּצֵ֣א דָוִיד֮ לִפְנֵיהֶם֒ וַיַּ֙עַן֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם אִם־לְשָׁל֞וֹם בָּאתֶ֤ם אֵלַי֙ לְעׇזְרֵ֔נִי יִֽהְיֶה־לִּ֧י עֲלֵיכֶ֛ם לֵבָ֖ב לְיָ֑חַד וְאִֽם־לְרַמּוֹתַ֣נִי לְצָרַ֗י בְּלֹ֤א חָמָס֙ בְּכַפַּ֔י יֵ֛רֶא אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבוֹתֵ֖ינוּ וְיוֹכַֽח׃ {ס}

In a tense and uncertain encounter, David stands before a group of men whose true motives are entirely unknown to him. Leaving the safety of his stronghold to meet them face-to-face [רש״י, מצודת דוד], he is filled with anxiety. This fear is well-founded, as the approaching group includes members of the tribe of Benjamin—the very tribe of King Saul, who is relentlessly hunting him down

Addressing the men directly, David presents them with two stark possibilities: genuine loyalty or deceitful betrayal. He begins with the positive outcome, declaring that if they have come in peace to offer their help, he seeks absolute unity, hoping their hearts will merge as one. Beyond a simple statement of alliance, this declaration is also understood as a heartfelt prayer. Because David cannot truly know their hidden intentions, he asks God that if these men mean well, God should fill his own heart with love for them, uniting them together as a single people

However, David cannot ignore his deep suspicions. He openly voices his fear that they might be arriving to trick him on behalf of his enemies He worries their true goal is to lull him into a false sense of security, causing him to lower his defenses so he can be easily captured [מצודת דוד]. In making this accusation, David firmly asserts his own innocence. He maintains that he has committed no crime, having done absolutely no harm to Saul, and is being pursued for no reason at all

Ultimately, David places the matter entirely in God's hands. He calls upon God to witness the situation, judge the truth, and bring clarity He prays that if the men are indeed setting a trap, God will recognize the injustice being done to him. David remains confident that God will expose any hidden deception, rule in favor of the righteous, and grant him the necessary wisdom to stay safe and keep his distance from them
