The battle reached a decisive turning point as the enemy's escape routes were systematically cut off. David successfully blocked the Philistines from retreating south through the Valley of Rephaim. Left with no other option, the Philistine army was forced into a northern retreat toward Gibeon and the downward slope of Beth Horon, where they suffered a heavy defeat [ביאור שטיינזלץ].

The pursuit was relentless. The fleeing Philistines were chased and attacked continuously along their escape route, taking heavy losses from the moment they ran from Gibeon until they finally reached Gezer [מצודת דוד]. While a parallel historical account of this event records the starting point of the chase as Geba, it refers to the exact same location as Gibeon [מצודת ציון].
