I Chronicles 14:2Sefaria

וַיֵּ֣דַע דָּוִ֔יד כִּֽי־הֱכִינ֧וֹ יְהֹוָ֛ה לְמֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּֽי־נִשֵּׂ֤את לְמַ֙עְלָה֙ מַלְכוּת֔וֹ בַּעֲב֖וּר עַמּ֥וֹ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ {ס}

A leader's greatest test often comes not during the struggle for power, but at the height of success. At the peak of his political and international achievements, David arrives at a profound realization about the source and purpose of his reign. He internalizes that his royal status is not a personal victory, but a divine mission meant to serve a much larger goal.

The primary approach among commentators is that this clarity was sparked by diplomatic gestures and gifts arriving from foreign kings. These tributes proved that his rule had expanded beyond local borders into a major, internationally recognized power, causing even unfamiliar nations to submit to him [מצודת דוד, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. However, another perspective suggests a split in how David processed his success [מלבי״ם]. According to this view, his understanding that God firmly established him as king over Israel stemmed from newfound internal unity, as the entire nation finally united under his command after a period of division. The second part of his realization, regarding his kingdom's elevated status among foreign nations, was specifically triggered by the arrival of royal messengers from Tyre.

This elevation of the kingdom operates on two distinct levels. On an earthly plane, it means his empire grew strong and achieved true greatness in the eyes of the surrounding nations [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. On a spiritual plane, David perceived through divine inspiration that this rise pointed toward the heavens. He recognized that his earthly success mirrored a higher spiritual unity and an added illumination within the Divine Presence [חומת אנך].

The ultimate peak of David's awareness lies in his deep humility. He completely refused to take credit for his success or view the foreign tributes as personal gifts. Instead, he firmly believed that his kingdom reached such great heights solely for the sake of the people of Israel, rather than any personal merit of his own [מצודת דוד, חומת אנך]. It was the rising strength and regional significance of the entire nation that actually motivated foreign powers to seek their friendship [ביאור שטיינזלץ].
