The organization of the priesthood was a vital step in preparing for the daily operations of the Temple. The priests were divided into twenty-four distinct shifts to rotate their duties. A lottery system determined the exact order in which these families would serve.

The family of Jehoiarib drew the very first lot, granting them the position of the initial shift in the Temple rotation. They held onto this specific role for many years. Following them, the second lot went to the family of Jedaiah, establishing them as the next group in the sequence.
