The massive copper pillars standing at the entrance of the Temple were crowned with tops of extraordinary, delicate craftsmanship. These upper sections were adorned with a complex blend of woven metalwork and hanging chains. The highest part of each top was enveloped in a fine, beautifully perforated mesh made of interwoven threads [מצודת דוד, רלב״ג, אברבנאל, ביאור שטיינזלץ]. This delicate netting formed a dome-like shape that completely wrapped around and covered the crown [רש״י, מלבי״ם]. The design of this mesh resembled a thicket of intertwined branches [מצודת ציון, מצודת דוד], with some identifying the specific pattern as the overlapping fronds of a palm tree [רש״י].

Beneath this woven dome hung intricately braided threads crafted into the shape of chains [מצודת ציון, ביאור שטיינזלץ, רלב״ג, אברבנאל]. These chains attached directly to the netting above and draped downward. Suspended at the very ends of these descending chains were two rows of decorative pomegranates, strategically placed to conceal the lower portion of the pillar's top [מלבי״ם, אברבנאל].

A specific count of seven is associated with each of these crowned pillars, though commentators differ on what this number represents. One approach suggests that the number refers to the hanging chains, meaning seven distinct chains descended from the netting to encircle the pillar [רלב״ג, אברבנאל, מלבי״ם]. Another perspective maintains that the number points to the branch motifs, indicating that seven palm branch designs wrapped around each mesh dome [רש״י, מצודת דוד].
