I Kings 7:1Sefaria

The transition from building God's home to the construction of Solomon's personal palace highlights a striking difference in time. The Temple was completed in just seven years, while the king's palace took nearly twice as long. The primary approach among commentators is that this time gap serves as a testament to Solomon's spiritual priorities and his righteousness. The palace mentioned refers specifically to Solomon's personal residence [ביאור שטיינזלץ]. Work on his home only began after the Temple was entirely finished and lasted thirteen years, bringing the total time spent building both structures to twenty years [מלבי״ם, רד״ק].

While a minority view suggests the palace only took two years to build and the number thirteen simply marks the year of Solomon's reign, this idea is rejected because later texts explicitly confirm twenty continuous years of construction [רד״ק]. The stark contrast in building times emphasizes Solomon's deep dedication. When it came to holy work, he acted with speed and enthusiasm. However, when building his own home, he moved slowly and deliberately, even though the Temple was much larger and more magnificent than his palace. Placing the timelines side by side dispels the notion that the Temple was built quickly because of a miracle. Instead, it proves that Solomon intentionally rushed to honor God while delaying his own honor [חומת אנך].

The completion of the project involved more than just a single personal dwelling. It encompassed an entire complex of government buildings, including the House of the Forest of Lebanon and the residence built for Pharaoh's daughter [אברבנאל]. Ultimately, the successful end of these massive projects highlights Solomon's remarkable perseverance and greatness of heart. Even though the construction of all these structures dragged on for many years, he never grew tired of the heavy burden and did not rest until every detail was fully accomplished [מלבי״ם, מצודת דוד, אברבנאל].
